Ein separater Boost-Fußschalter sorgt für eine sofortige Pegelanhebung, ergänzt durch einen Phasenumkehrschalter zur Vermeidung von Phasenauslöschungen im Tieftonbereich.

Developed in collaboration with bassist Billy Sheehan, the bass overdrive unit splits the incoming signal into parallel clean and distorted paths for dual-rig tonal blending. Independent Level controls balance the clean and drive channels alongside dedicated Drive, Tone, and a Hi/Lo frequency range switch. An integrated post-mix compressor offers High, Mid, and Off modes with internal threshold and compression level adjustment trimmers. The drive circuit features a socketed 8-pin dual inline op-amp chip that allows solderless replacement for customized distortion characteristics. Dedicated TRS send/return effect loops for both the clean and drive channels enable independent outboard processing or discrete multi-pickup routing. A dedicated Boost footswitch delivers instant gain staging, complemented by a phase inverter switch to eliminate low-end phase cancellation.

Der LAB ist ein optischer Kompressor. Er verwendet spezielle Optokoppler, um eine musikalisch klingende Kompression von bis zu 30 dB zu erreichen.
Wir fanden es toll, wie die alten optischen Kompressoren wie der LA-2A, der LA-3 und der LA-4 im Aufnahmestudio selbst bei starker Kompression weich und natürlich klangen.

Die Essenz des LAB-Klangs kommt von den schnellen Attack- und langsamen Release-Zeiten des speziellen Optokopplers. Das Verhalten des Optokopplers ist recht komplex und programmabhängig. Es kann nicht mit einfachen Widerstands-Kondensator-Netzwerken modelliert werden. Wir wollten, dass das reine Verhalten des Optokopplers die Dynamik des LABs bestimmt und nicht durch RC-Filterung ergänzt wird.

The LAB is an optical compressor. It uses custom optocouplers to achieve up to 30dB of musical-sounding compression.
We loved how in the recording studio even with tons of compression the old optical compressors such as the LA-2A, the LA-3, the LA-4 sounded smooth and natural.

The essence of the LAB's sound comes from the fast attack and slow release times of the custom optocoupler. The optocoupler's behaviour is quite complex, and program-dependent. It can't be modelled with simple resistor-capacitor networks. We wanted the pure response of the optocoupler to define the LAB's dynamics, and not supplement that with RC filtering.

The Justin Chancellor Cry Baby Wah is a multi-tool of sonic craftsmanship, combining three separate effects into a single pedal: the fluid expressiveness of a custom midrange filter, the bright aggression of a custom wah circuit, and the chainsaw grind of a vintage fuzz. It's the perfect complement to bass player Justin Chancellor's multi-dimensional role in the band Tool. Whether opening up soundscapes with chords and harmonics or syncing up with guitarist Adam Jones to perform arresting single-note unison runs, Justin goes above and beyond the traditional boundaries of his instrument to help compose the band's multi-layered tunes. He is, without a doubt, one of the modern pioneer users of effects on bass, and he keeps a carefully configured pedalboard at his disposal for crafting tones and exploring sounds. This custom Cry Baby Wah combines some of his favorite ways to do just that—filter, wah, and fuzz.

EBS's OctaBass Blue Label is an analog octave divider designed to track bass signals and produce a sub-octave tone one octave below the played pitch. Independent volume controls regulate the balance between the direct instrument signal and the synthesized sub-octave effect. An integrated continuous Tone control sweeps the sub-octave character from deep sub-bass frequencies to focused synth-style overtones.
